Sports at Kings’ - An Overview of the Year 2010/11
This has been an incredibly busy year for Kings’ on a sporting front. More students have represented their school on field, court, track and in the pool than ever before.  For the first time Kings’ entered a Year 3 and 4 football team into the Dubai League. The Year 6 football team have consistently performed at a high level in all competitions. We have also managed to play some B team fixtures to give even more students a chance to play.

Our cricket team has also enjoyed considerable success over the year, playing both outdoor and indoor fixtures and the performance of Kings’ students at all levels in swimming competitions and galas has been remarkable. Sincere thanks to the teachers who have given up so much of their time to coach the teams.

Swimming
We have had another fantastic swim squad year which has seen both of our A and B Squads taking part in more than ten full galas. Our children have displayed sportsmanship and dedication throughout the season with many arriving before school each Thursday to attend extra training sessions.  It was pleasing to have the opportunity for our B Team swimmers to show their prowess in a number of galas during the Spring term.  Our incredibly promising Year 2 swimmers swam brilliantly in a recent gala at JESS Arabian Ranches. Wear your medals with pride Year 2 – the future of swim squad is looking even brighter as you move into Year 3! We also enjoyed very successful and entertaining inter-house galas during the Spring term when every one of our children enjoyed sharing their hard work and excitement with parents. It was pleasing to see the children wearing their house colours with pride and all of the supporting banners and signs. A huge thank you to Mr. Rowles, Miss Oldfield, Lisa and all of the Desert Sport Service coaches for supporting and helping our squad throughout the year.

Year 3 Football Squad 2010/11
This is the first time that we have ever entered the Year 3 and Year 4 into the league. It was a very nervous team of boys that represented Kings’ at Jebel Ali for their first competitive fixture of the season. Since, they have probably improved more than any team in the school.  They have trained  each Monday after school and have worked hard to put their new found and improved skills into practice in their games.  They have encouraged each other and really worked together as a team. I was particularly pleased that in their final game of the season all their hard work and commitment paid off when they beat Rashid School for Boys 4-0. 19 boys have represented the school this year for Year 3 and I look forward to working with them again next season.

The Year 3 Squad: Sam Mullane, Marius Muller,William Burns,Ben Potter, Luke Peters, Sam Martin, Matthew Thornley, Zaidan Khan, Ollie Doherty,
Adam Mitchell, Harry Devereux, Oscar Heywood, Hugo Gregory, Kallan Fraser, Jack Gravestock, Liam Ciolli, Scott McLintock, Connor Morrall and John Rees.

Year 5 Football squad 2010/11
Both Year 6 and Year 5 had joint training sessions on Sunday’s after school with an impressive turnout . Each session was made up of a range of different drills and ended in mixed Year 5 and Year 6 games. When the time came to pick the team to represent the school for each year group both teachers found it difficult to decide on a final panel.

Despite just missing out in a few tournaments it was a successful year for the Year 5s. From the first game they continually improved on their performance game by game. Looking back over the year our results have been very pleasing, particularly against a number of larger schools. The majority of their games were relatively low scoring with a lot of drawn games and missing out on the all important 3 points!

In the competitions they missed out twice on getting through to the knockout rounds by the slightest of margins, once by a single point and secondly just being beaten on goal difference. With the season now over and a few months rest for the players I will be working hard being behind the scenes to capture a few signings for September!

Thanks to all the players involved throughout the year for their effort, teamwork, commitment and most importantly sportsmanship. You have done yourselves and Kings’ proud each time you have represented the school. The following players have represented the Year 5 team in competitions during the year: Keanu Boucher, Shakir Bahida, Finlay Brash, Elliot Crossley, Patrick Dowling, Marc Dummar, Cameron Matthews, Jack Potter, William White, Ben Williams, Mark Baxtor, Alma Zickerman, Serena Lambert.

Year 6 Football squad 2010/11
It took so long for us to win a trophy this season – I know I’m very biased, but over the year, we’ve been by far the best year 6 team in Dubai, playing some outstanding football! The children who have represented the Year 6 A team (including some Year 5s) in competitive games and tournament are: Trevor Mais, Max Holt ,Harry Wood ,Matty Russo, William Treston, Felix Firth, Cameron Graham, Angus Thompson, Amaury Bess De Laromiguiere, Anna Hoskins, Rory Riddle, Patrick Dowling, Mark Baxter, Shakir Bahida and Jack Potter.

Over the year – we finished top of our group losing only one game in the league and beginning the year by skillfully beating of DIA Wolves 5 – 0. We were unlucky not to progress to the semi at the DESS tournament and were frustrated by a brilliant performance by the Horizon keeper, who must have saved over 10 difficult shots.  In the 7s Tournament, we were knocked out on a penalty in the semi final – but were acknowledged for playing some of the most skillful football in the competition. In the Wellington Tournament we got to the final and lost by 1 goal to 0. This was perhaps the hardest result to take, but it has made everyone who played even more determined to succeed.

Finally we played the Tournament at Raffles, winning all 6 games and the coveted trophy which sits proudly in the cabinet in our school entrance.
Ian McGarry- Coach

Netball
Both the Year 5 and Year 6 netball squads had a great season this year with both teams seeing an improvement in their performance. During every fixture each team represented Kings’ Dubai with an outstanding attitude and enthusiasm to improve.

The Year 5 girls showed real determination throughout every match and tournament and soon became familiar with the tactics and performances needed to beat their opponents. They had some tough matches throughout but even managed to beat one Year 6 team. The girls deservedly reached the middle of the league and with their increased skill and understanding can now strive to enhance their placing next year. It has been a pleasure to bring on our Year 6 girls, many of whom started netball club in Year 4. They have all worked so hard as a team and have really raised their standard as the year has progressed. Every player displayed skill, teamwork and a thirst to win during each match. They played some tough competitions in the league and ended up in second place to Wellington who won by just 1 point. The girls have represented the school in numerous matches and tournaments across Dubai and have shown excellent skill and ball play throughout.

A special mention to Naoise Morgan and Bethan Kempell who were both voted Player of the League for Year 5 and Year 6 respectively. This award is highly regarded as it is the result of gaining the most Player of the Match votes by the other teams and umpires in the league. A big well done to each and every girl this year, you should be very proud of your performances. Well done girls!

Kings’ Dubai Cricket Review 2010-2011
This last year has seen cricket at Kings’ continue to flourish, not only through the development of existing talent, but also through the arrival of new players. The squad have trained hard and reaped the benefits by coming top of the Spring term cricket league, having played Horizon, Raffles and Dubai British School. Points to note this year are firstly, the improvement in the fielding which has been outstanding with the boys thinking about their position on the field, walking in, backing-up and accuracy when throwing. Secondly, the development of the bowlers who have worked hard to bowl to the offside and have focused on accuracy rather than speed. Finally, on the batting front the team has been working hard to master the forward defensive and pull shot which have definitely proved useful during the matches.

Unfortunately we have to say goodbye to several players this year who are either moving on to secondary school or returning to the UK.  These are Tom Thornley, Harry Woods, Felix Firth, Oliver Gregory, Harvey Coombes, Matty Russo, Max Holt and Jack Potter. We wish them all the best in their new schools.

Next year promises to be busy with the possibility of an indoor quick cricket tournament in the Winter term as well as the outdoor league in the Spring term. For all those interested there will be trials at the start of the Winter term, so if you are a budding Freddie Flintoff make sure you sign up. Lastly Mr. Greenlees and I would like extend a huge thank you to the boys who have been so enthusiastic despite the heat and to the parents who have supported the team amazingly throughout the year.

Kings’ Instrumental Tuition
As another year draws to a close it has been pleasing to reflect on the achievements of our hardworking and talented musicians.  We currently have 97 children learning instruments and several more extending their experiences outside of Kings’. These have included Associated Board Examinations, Saturday Morning Sessions at the Centre for Musical Arts, warming up for Summer school in July and taking part in a number of concerts in Dubai and Sharjah.

As Year 6 prepare to leave us, we have a few opportunities for our younger pupils to sign up to learn an instrument with us next year.  If you are interested in applying for your child to take small group lessons at school please see Reception who have all the information you need.  We currently offer small group tuition in: violin, viola, cello, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn and classical guitar. Of course, if you have any further questions, please drop me an email on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and I will be happy to help.

Current instrumental students, please make sure you have returned your completed form to let us know whether or not you would like to continue your lessons.  If your form is not back with us we will assume that you are not continuing in September and give your place to another student from the waiting list.

NEWS JUST IN  -  PERCUSSION LESSONS COME TO KINGS’ DUBAI!
Exciting news from the Music Department – we have finally managed to secure a percussion teacher who will be able to join us in September.  The lessons will run in the same way as the rest of the instrumental tuition scheme in that they will be in small groups for half an hour and will cost the same- 700Dhs per term for half hour sessions.  The difference here is that they will run between 2:30pm and 5:30pm as we do not have a sound proofed studio in which the drum kits can be set up. Once the children have signed up the lesson time will remain constant for the whole year. These drum kit lessons are for Year 3 upwards, as smaller people have trouble reaching the pedals and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.  If you are interested in applying please email me at
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it by Sunday 19th June.  You will then be sent an application form which should be returned by Tuesday 21st June.  As in other groups where places are limited, lessons will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. You will be notified on Sunday 26th June if you have been successful in obtaining a place.

We are also going to be running a percussion club as an after school activity. This is an external, paid activity that will run 2:30pm-3.30pm alongside our after school programme. This will be advertised with the clubs schedule in September.  We will give priority to children unsuccessful in gaining a place in the drum kit lessons for the first term.
Thank you.
