Dear Parents,

This week’s Sporting Life is full of dates and information.  Our teams and squads are springing into life for the New Year, training hard and getting excited about the huge number of fixtures, tournaments, galas and matches that we have already arranged for this term.  Please see the listings below – individual letters will come to those children involved in each event – if you have any queries please email the coach of the individual teams taking part once you have received notification of your child’s involvement.  Thank you again to the Mums and Dads who provide transport and support the children in all of their sporting endeavours – we are immensely grateful to you and very proud of the children who represent Kings’.

This term also sees our school celebrate Sports Days, Interhouse Swimming Galas and, new this year, an Interhouse Sporting Tournament – details to follow soon, along with match reports and updates from our talented sports persons!

Kings’ vs Safa Match Report – by Stan Roze, Year 6

On Thursday 19th January, the amazing Kings’ football squad met Safa football team.

‘Kings’ get the kick off and Safa choose to stay where they are.  Kings’ start and run straight towards the goal but unluckily get stopped by Safa’s defence.  This time Safa run to the goal, they shoot from long range, Kings’ goalkeeper Jack dives for the ball but sadly the ball rolls into the net.  1-0 for Safa.  Kings’ start off again, they run towards Safa’s goal.  Shaan gets the ball and shoots.  The goalkeeper dives for it but the ball skids under his arm.  It’s a goal!!!  1-1. Then the referee whistles half time.  Safa starts but lose the ball straight away, Kings’ run and Mark shoots, the shot is deflected off a player and in the air. Eloi headers it and it goes straight to Stan who taps it into the goal.  2-1, Kings’ is leading.  Safa start off running towards the goal, not much time left. They dribble past Kings’ defenders and shoot.  Jack touches the ball, it hits the post and goes in, 2-2!  End of the match and everyone is happy.  We shake hands and go back to our coaches.’

Dear Parents,

Updates

The Staff Challenge!

We are making progress as a staff with our challenge to learn the National Anthem.  The children had serious doubts that we could do it but with their help and encouragement we are getting better and better.  We now need to try and sing without the words!

Getting Greener

Kings’ is getting greener was launched last Thursday thanks to the Vintcent family and their connection with Lewis Pugh who swam at the North Pole to draw the world’s attention to the global warming agenda.  Kings’ encourages all families (as well as us at school) to think of ways we can be greener.  Thank you to everyone who is embracing this – every little helps and together we can made a difference.  We are all looking forward to finding out what each class’s commitments are in this week’s assembly.  We will keep you posted.  A special thank you to Ross and Georgia and their mum for putting together such a powerful film clip of the interview with Lewis.

Homework > Home Learning

The homework facelift is underway.  We want to balance the ‘traditional’ style homework with more open and creative tasks for children to carry out with parents.  Coffee afternoons are proving that you all have different opinions and expectations.  The consultation process will help us get the balance right so that children’s learning is extended appropriately beyond school without it becoming onerous.  Thank you for your support through this tricky phase.

Open Day

Year 6 were impressive ambassadors as they took new Kings’ families around our school last Wednesday.  We received so many positive comments and feedback; it was actually very moving to hear.

Year 7 Kings’ College Meeting

Over 40 parents attended the evening with Mr Turner, our Head of Secondary designate last Wednesday.  He shared his vision for the school, his philosophy on education and answered questions about next year when Year 7 will be initially catered for within the Kings’ Dubai expansion.  It was a very successful evening and he intends to visit Year 6 again in early February to talk to the children and answer their questions.

Parents’ Evening with Specialist Teachers

These were very well attended.  Thank you to parents for coming to share in your children’s learning in the specialist subjects.

Tea Towel Success in Year 1

A tremendous 2710 AED was raised by Year 1 parents led by Sarah Fielder and Sue Crane with the wonderful Year 1 tea towel.  Teachers are planning how to spend the money.  A big well done and thank you to the two mums for making this happen.

Firm but Friendly Reminder!

·         No, no, no nuts in any shape or form in school AT ALL please.  We have children whose lives are in danger if they come into contact with even a trace of nut.

·         NITS are around! Please check your child/children’s hair weekly to stay scratch free and happy.

·         No novelty erasers (it’s too tempting to take/trade them). Please keep eraser collections safe at home.

·         Please, please, please try and bring the correct change when paying for trips at reception.  Pressure on reception in the mornings can be greatly alleviated if we can just take the right amount from you.

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of the first term!  There are lots of things to celebrate in our final newsletter of 2011: Year 2 Trip to the Desert - By Tom Haigh

On Wednesday Amber and Pearl classes went on a school trip to the desert.  First we had to get on a big yellow bug.  It took about 30 minutes to get there. When we got there we put our lunch boxes in a big stone building. After that we met our guide who was going to show us around for the day.  She led us through some large palm trees down a long path.  We soon reached a camel.  We were allowed to stroke it.  It rested it’s head on the soft sand.  We learnt that in olden days people used the camel poo to put it on a fire and inhale the burning smoke.  The believed it would stop them becoming ill.  We walked further down the path to see an Arabian horse.  It was brown with a white nose and white legs. The guide stood in the middle of the circle and made the horse gallop. The velvety smooth Arabian horse is far more beautiful than an ordinary horse.  It lives for about thirty years.  It has 17 bones but an ordinary horse has 18 bones.  So when they race they use an Arabian horse because it can run faster.  After we went to see the goats.  We fed the goats and gave them milk from a baby’s bottle. In the olden days they used goat lungs for water bottles.  We also go to try camel milk.  We liked it and we asked for more!  It is three times richer than normal milk.  Finally we walked back to the big stone building and picked up our lunch things and went to the picnic area.  It was a great school trip and we learnt lots of new things.  My favourite part was when we got to feed the goats.

National Day

Despite the last minute change of the day the whole school was a vibrant mass of colour and we mad a human flag on the field to launch our National Day celebrations.  The rest of the day was spent absorbed in fun activities based on the different Emirates and aspects of Dubai's history.  We enjoyed tasting some different flavours in our lunch boxes and enjoyed a special Arabic assembly in the afternoon.

Visit to Jumeirah Model School

We were invited to Jumeirah Model School for Girls and they kindly showed us the traditions of our nation.  We were guided round this amazing Arabic school. Everyone enjoyed it and we learnt a bunch of new things. They made us feel really welcome as they cooked Arabic food and they performed a traditional wedding and dance. They lead us to their creative centre where we got to decorate a muffin and EAT IT!!! A lady told us a magical tale of how our home was united with the other six emirates. In the end we were proud to represent kings’ and they treated us warmly.

Festive Fayre

Wow! What an amazing evening.  The VOKs team worked like a finely tuned instrument to pull of the best festive fayre yet.  We thank all the volunteers of Kings’ and all the children who helped for making sure everything went so smoothly.  A big thank you also to everyone who attended and spent their money!  The ladies are still counting it!

Book Fair

Thank you Eileeen for organizing the Book Fair – it got everyone thinking about their Christmas shopping!  We managed to earn a whopping AED3228 commission which we have reinvested in real books to support the book banding.

Golden Moments

This week’s golden moments were celebrated for Eddie Zickerman and Tiana Lane-Williamson:  Eddie Zickerman really found recording in a systematic way tricky to begin with and had no idea about why on earth we were talking about ice cream flavours in maths!  However, because of his ultra sparkly and hard working attitude, he has reached a level of understanding about systematic recording that has truly astounded me!  Eddie is a prime example of somebody that puts in 100% effort and enthusiasm into absolutely everything he tries and his love of learning is infectious.  Eddie, you are a pleasure to teach and certainly sparkle like a sapphire – well done! Tiana Lane-Williamson is another example of someone whose thirst for a challenge has lead to her solving maths problems way beyond what I would expect of someone in Year 3.

Like Eddie, she really had to tune in her brain to this way of thinking but she has risen to the challenge time and time again - it has been wonderful to see how much progress she has made in just a short space of time.  Just to give one example – during our matchstick triangle investigation I challenged Tiana to try and spot patterns in her results that could lead to a formula.  With a tiny push in the right direction, Tiana found the formula – amazing!  Not only that – for an extra homework challenge, I asked her to see if she could come up with a generic formula for any polygon and guess what, she managed it!  Absolutely brilliant stuff, well done Tiana.   Mrs French

Last weekwe celebrated Charlotte Haigh for the 100% effort that she puts in and because she goes that extra mile, thinking outside the box and challenging herself to develop her learning further.  This has been consistent throughout Year 5.  When set homework to research the changing coastline of Dubai, she not only conducted the research diligently, she also developed this in to a movie using the ICT skills she learnt in Year 4.  When the movie didn't play Charlotte used her problem solving skills and came back with the final version.  Charlotte is a great role model and consistently works to extend her learning and also makes an effort to support others when they need it.    Mrs Ellis

Osborne Sports

From January after the school clubs (i.e. from 3:30pm) there will be a sporting/after-school care programme run by Seth Chappels and David Stedman.  More details will be available soon.  Please send any queries to Seth or David on  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Festive Fandango!

Mrs Qayyum was as fabulous as every in co-ordinatiing our Festive Fandango to bring out the best in all our voices.  Well done to everyone for turning up and joining in.  We loved it!

FS Christmas Show

Our little ones delighted us all with their selection of songs and entertained a HUGE audience.  They were so brave on the stage and looked wonderful in their festive outfits.  Thank you to the FS team for co-ordinating this and to all the mums, dads, grandmas and grandads who along along!  Merry Christmas to you all from the Kings' Dubai team and a healthy happy New Year!  See you all on Wednesday 4th January 2012.

Yours sincerely

A Wilkinson

Important Reminders:

Car Park safety before and after school - please remember there are lots of small children around.  There have been a few near misses on the sand, in the car park and around the school generally.  If we are all vigilant we can ensure everyone's safety;

Clubs - please make sure your child understands they can not opt out of clubs at the end of the day.  Only a teacher or the nurse can make the decision to send a child home and not attend the club;

Lost property - We have a lost property box at reception for items of value - if you have lost anything please go and see the lovely ladies on reception;

Staff Toilets - The staff toilet should not be used by parents with or without their children at all please - there is a visitors toilet that can be used and children can use their own bathrooms at the end of the day.  Thank you for respecting this;

Behavious of children at the end of the day - please ensure your children do not climb / run / put themselves in any danger.  These rules and expectations do not change at home time and with your support we can ensure school remains calm at the end of the day;

Early pick-ups - Unless absolutely necessary please avoid collecting your child early from class as they miss valuable learning. We understand that this may happen for appointments occassionally but please try to avoid it for attending sports events for older siblings.

Thank you for reading this!
